What to Wear for Your Session

Start with soft, neutral tones

Neutral and earthy colors photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on connection rather than clothing.

Great choices include:

• Cream, ivory, beige

• Soft gray, taupe

• Sage, olive, muted greens

• Soft blues, denim

• Warm browns, rust, camel

These tones layer well together and work especially nicely in natural outdoor light.

Coordinating > matching

Instead of everyone wearing the same color, aim for coordinating tones.

Think:

• Similar color families

• Light + medium tones mixed together

• A balance of textures rather than identical outfits

This creates visual interest while still feeling cohesive.

Patterns: keep it simple

Patterns can add interest, but less is more.

• Limit patterns to one or two people in the group

• Choose small, subtle patterns over bold or graphic prints

• Avoid logos, large text, or busy designs

When in doubt, solids with texture (knit sweaters, linen, denim) photograph beautifully.

Texture adds depth

Textures help bring softness and warmth to photos:

• Knit sweaters

• Linen or cotton dresses

• Denim layers

• Cardigans or light jackets

Layers also allow for easy outfit variation during your session.

What to avoid (when possible)

To keep your images timeless, I recommend avoiding:

• Neon or overly bright colors

• Large logos or character graphics

• Heavy black or stark white on everyone

• Busy or high-contrast patterns

A little black or white mixed in is perfectly fine — just not head-to-toe for the whole group.

Shoes matter too

Neutral shoes photograph best and keep attention where it belongs.

• Barefoot works beautifully for in-home sessions

• Neutral boots, sandals, or simple sneakers are great outdoors

• Avoid athletic shoes with bright accents when possible

Comfort is key

If something feels uncomfortable, it will show. Choose clothing that:

• Allows you to move freely

• Feels like you

• Fits well and isn’t constantly being adjusted

Kids especially photograph best when they can move and play naturally.

When in doubt — ask!

If you’re unsure about outfits, I’m always happy to help. Feel free to send me photos of your options, and I can help you narrow things down.

Final reminder

Your photos are about connection, not perfection. These are simply guidelines to help your session feel relaxed and your images feel timeless.
